Minecraft Modding Classes
Turn Minecraft into a learning platform: create mods, custom worlds, and learn real coding.
About This Class
Students learn to modify and extend Minecraft through modding, redstone engineering, and command blocks. They'll progress from in-game logic to actual Java or JavaScript-based modding, building custom items, mobs, and game mechanics. A great entry point into programming for Minecraft fans.
Tech Tails' Minecraft modding classes for kids turn a game students already love into a private, 1-on-1 introduction to real programming. In live weekly Zoom sessions, a dedicated instructor helps students go beyond playing Minecraft Java Edition and start building inside it, using command blocks and redstone to create custom logic before moving into actual modding with tools like MCreator and Forge. Younger or newer students often begin with in-game systems: automated farms, hidden doors, or simple minigames built entirely from command blocks and redstone circuits.
From there, students progress to writing their own mods, adding custom items, blocks, or mobs, and eventually learn JavaScript-based scripting to build features Minecraft doesn't offer out of the box. It's a natural entry point into programming for kids who already know their way around the game.

What they can build
Examples. Every student's path is built around their own interests.
A custom mob or creature
Design and configure a new mob with its own behavior and stats using MCreator, then test it inside a real Minecraft Java Edition world.
A redstone automation build
Build a working automatic farm, hidden entrance, or item sorter using redstone circuits, learning logic and timing without writing a line of code.
A command block minigame
Script a simple minigame, like a parkour course with checkpoints or a hide-and-seek mode, using command blocks to control scoring and win conditions.
A custom item or tool
Add a new weapon, armor set, or tool with unique effects to the game using MCreator and Forge, then balance its stats through playtesting.
A modded structure or area
Use Forge and MCreator to design a new area or generated structure players can discover, combining building skills with mod configuration.
A JavaScript-based gameplay tweak
Write simple JavaScript to change how an existing game mechanic works, learning how modders extend Minecraft beyond command blocks and menus.
How Your Student Progresses
- 1
Getting started
New students usually start inside the game itself, using command blocks and redstone to build automated systems and simple custom rules without any external software. This stage teaches core logic concepts like conditions and sequencing in a format that already feels familiar and fun.
- 2
Building skills
Students move into MCreator, learning to design and add their own custom items, blocks, and mobs to a working mod. They begin thinking like a modder rather than just a player, considering how new content should look, behave, and balance against the rest of the game.
- 3
Going further
Advanced students work more directly with Forge and start writing JavaScript to build features and mechanics MCreator's visual tools can't create alone. This stage introduces real coding habits, like testing changes and fixing errors, while staying grounded in a game the student already knows well.
Is this class a good fit?
Minecraft Modding classes are great for kids who:
- already spend hours playing Minecraft and want to go deeper
- enjoy building and tinkering more than following instructions exactly
- are curious about coding but want to start somewhere familiar
- like seeing an idea show up in a game world right away

Minecraft Modding FAQ
What age can my child start Minecraft modding classes?
Minecraft modding classes are open to students ages 7 and up. Younger students typically start with command blocks and redstone inside the game itself, which requires no coding, while older students move faster into MCreator, Forge, and JavaScript-based modding. The instructor adjusts the starting point based on your child's age and Minecraft experience.
Does my child need to know how to code already?
No. Most students start with zero coding background, learning logic and sequencing through redstone and command blocks first. Actual coding, through MCreator's mod tools and eventually JavaScript, is introduced gradually once a student is comfortable with those foundational concepts, so there's no requirement to know a language beforehand.
Does my child need to own Minecraft Java Edition?
Yes, Minecraft modding classes use Minecraft Java Edition specifically, since it supports the modding tools like MCreator and Forge the curriculum is built around. The Bedrock Edition, common on consoles and mobile, does not support these tools. Your instructor can confirm setup details during the free trial class.
What will my child actually build in these classes?
Projects range from in-game builds, like automated farms and command block minigames, to real mods that add custom items, mobs, or mechanics to the game using MCreator and Forge. Instructors personalize projects to what excites each student, whether that's a new weapon, a custom creature, or a modded structure to explore.
Is Minecraft modding a good way to introduce my child to coding?
Yes. Because the game environment is already familiar, students focus their energy on learning logic, structure, and eventually JavaScript syntax rather than also learning a new context from scratch. Many students who start with Minecraft modding go on to other Tech Tails coding or game design classes once they're ready for a new project.
